Alice Gatling Obituary

Ms. Alice Raye Nowell Gatling better known as "Molly" the daughter of the late William Edward Taylor and the late Donnie Pencie Nowell Jordan was born October 1, 1947 in Gates County, NC.  She was the fourth oldest child of 16 children.  Our Heavenly father decided that Alice had fought long and hard enough, and decided to dispatch his angels to bring his daughter home.  Alice entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 8, 2019 at Duke Medical Hospice Center in Durham, NC.

Alice joined Greater Welch's Chapel Church at an early age, where she was a devoted Christian and a faithful member until her death.  Alice graduated from D. F. Walker High School in Edenton, NC.  She later married the late George Penn Gatling and God blessed them with two children.  Alice retired from Chowan Hospital in Edenton, NC after years of helping others in need of physical therapy.  She was a member of the Gates County BELLES, a civic organization that focused on education and the community where she served loyally.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband George Penn Gatling, father William Edward Taylor and her mother Donnie (Sister) Pencie Nowell Jordan, a second mother Willie B. Twine; five brothers: Floyd Rodgers Nowell, John Wayne Jordan, Horace (Doodlebug) Jordan, James (Red) Nowell and Ricky Jordan; two brother-in-law's: Andrew Gatling and Charlie Beamon; two sister's: Faye (Layebell) Riddick and Merlene Twine; two sister-in-law's: Delphine Jones and Annie Beamon; a step son: Tracy Nowell; a grandchild: Makayla Nowell.

She leaves to cherish precious memories and will be greatly missed by her daughter: Astrid Gatling of Durham, NC, step daughter: Annette James, Hertford, NC, her son: George Penn Gatling, Jr. (Sherita) of High Point, NC, four grandchildren: Brayden Gatling of High Point, NC, Demetris Cofield of Tyner, NC, Destiny Combs of Youngsville, NC, and Marketa Taylor of Raleigh, NC; two God children: Doratheia Griffin of Elizabeth City, NC and Joseph Simpson, Jr. of Edenton, NC; fifteen sisters: Mable J. Riddick (McKinley) of Elizabeth City, NC, Barbara Jordan of Chesapeake, VA, Joyce Hunter (Wyatt) of Belvidere, NC, Esther Jordan of Elizabeth City, NC, Rose Nell Dillard (Johnnie) of Sunbury, NC, Donnie Bryant (George) and Connie Hunter (Corey, Sr.) of Belvidere, NC, Lorraine Bryant (Tony, Sr.) of Gates, NC, Carolyn J. Hurdle (Horace), Dr. Hilda J. Arline (Christopher) of Hobbsville, NC, Essie Nowell Norfleet of Zebulon, NC, Kay Francis Odom of Elizabeth City, NC, Leora Felton of Rockville Center, NY, Tammie Tillman (Colin) of Elizabeth City, NC, and Pamela Hurdle (Johnnie) of Hertford, NC; four brothers: Ree Dell Nowell of Edenton, NC, Willie L. Nowell (Kimberly) of Waterbury, CT, William Wilson of Franklin, VA, and Marvin Wilson, (Carolyn) of Courtland, VA; four sister-in-law's: Louise Jordan of Waterbury, CT, Terri Jordan of Gatesville, NC, Sandra Nickens of Gatesville, NC and Rose Nell Freeman Nowell of Sunbury, NC; one uncle: Walter Lewis Nowell of Sunbury, NC; two aunts: Francine Madrey of Greensboro, NC and Mary Odelle Coldin of Trenton, NJ: three special friends Rev. McArthur Britt of Elizabeth City, NC, Norma Simpson of Tyner, NC, Margery (Sis) Britt of Hertford, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.  She also leaves her sweet pet dog, Sassy.
 

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday November 16, 2019 at 11:00am at Greater Welch's Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.  Ms. Gatling will be laid to rest at the Gatling Family Cemetery. The family will receive members of the community on Friday November 15, 2019 from 4:00pm-7:00pm at the funeral home.
