Elizabeth Elliott Obituary

On July 29, 2022, God sent his heavenly angels to Duke University Hospital, to bring home his faithful child, Elizabeth Ann Elliott.

Elizabeth (Ann) was born July 25, 1956 to William Edward Elliott, Jr. (Buddy) and Bertha Lee Elliott in Tyner, North Carolina who both preceded her in death.

She attended Gates County Public Schools and graduated from Gates County High School in June 1974.  She joined the Greater Welch’s Chapel Baptist Church at the age of 13 years.

Elizabeth (Ann) favorite pastimes were reading the Bible, craft work, making jewelry, making flower arrangements and watching food shows.

Elizabeth (Ann) smile, head strongness, compassion and encouraging words will be missed by many.  The love for family was always in her talk.  She would say “Tell each other you love them while they are alive and don’t wait until they are dead, because they can’t hear you.”

At an early age, Elizabeth (Ann) always wanted to teach. While in her teens she taught many family members how to write their names, abc’s and numbers before going to school.  She also had a second passion for helping the sick and the elderly.  She use to sit with her grandfather (Bill Elliott) everyday after school on his porch and said she wanted to work with the sick and older people.

After high school, years later, her dream came true.  She enrolled at Roanoke-Chowan Community College where she earned an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education K-5.  A few years later she enrolled at Elizabeth City State University in Early Childhood Education, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education K-8.

After graduating from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth (Ann) went to work for the Gates County School System where she worked at Buckland Elementary School as the Before and After School Teacher.  While at Buckland she received the State 4-H After School Teacher of the year Award.  The Gates County School System also employed her as the teacher for the Exceptional Children Program, working with behaviorist and at-risk children.  She worked with these children at the high school and some at their homes, grades ninth to twelfth.

After leaving the education field, Elizabeth (Ann) enrolled in a Nurses Aid Program, where she earned a Certified Nurse Assistant License for the state of North Carolina and the state of Virginia, working for over 23+ years in Nursing Home Care.  To this present time, she continued to work in Home Health Care.

Elizabeth (Ann) was always ready to gain more knowledge, when she took a Computer Fundamental Class where she received a Certificate from Roanoke-Chowan Community College.

Elizabeth (Ann) married her high school sweetheart, Johnny Michael Powell, who preceded her in death.  To this union was born a daughter and two sons.  Elizabeth (Ann) is loved and cherished by family and friends who will keep her memory strong: one daughter, Teresa Elliott Wright (Chadwick) of Durham, NC; two sons, Jon Powell, Sr. of Eden, NC, and Germaine Powell (Sharnice) of Rockingham, VA; five grandchildren, Unique Mayo of Charlotte, NC, Kairouan Glenn of Raleigh, NC, Chadwick Wright, Jr. of Mebane, NC, Gianna Powell of Rockingham, VA and Jon Powell, Jr. of Eden, NC;  one great grandson, Mason Jones of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Gloria Grant (Lewellyn) of Lewiston, NC; one brother, William Elliott, Jr. (Sherry) of Sunbury, NC; one nephew, Marcus Elliott (Letisha) of Zebulon, NC; two nieces, Tonita Eure (Fabian) of Hobbsville, NC and Lyneshia Elliott of Clayton, NC; six great-nephews, Semaj Harrell of Hobbsville, NC, Zaden Woodley and Zebulone Woodley of Hobbsville, NC, Gavin Elliott and Camden Elliott of Zebulon, NC and Brayden Jordan of Clayton, NC; two great-nieces, Ty’ajah Williams of Greenville, NC and Zebri’ya Woodley of Hobbsville, NC; one great-great-niece, Naomi Harrell of Sunbury, NC; three aunts, Dorothy Coefield of Edenton, NC, Maria Jordan (Tom) of Plainfield, NJ and Margaret Brunson of Burlington, NJ; three uncles, Louis Elliott of Sunbury, NC, Ercelle Elliott (Mabel) of Hobbsville, NC, Leroy Elliott (Vencine) of Plainfield, NJ; and a host of cousins and friends.
