Elzenia Bishop Obituary

Elzenia Gaskins Bishop, the daughter of the late Mildred Matthews Gaskins and Henry Gaskins, Jr. was born in the year of our Lord, October 11,1944, in Society Hill, South Carolina.  "Zean" as we lovingly called her, transitioned to God's eternal mansion on May 12, 2025.  She leaves behind her beloved only child and daughter, Leslya Zenice "Niecy" Bishop Wallace; her son-in-law, Terrell Lanodd Wallace; and her two cherished grandsons, Elijah De'aunte Wallace and Elisha Lanodd Wallace.  Elzenia is also survived by her loving sisters, Henrietta Gaskins Babin and Betty Mildred Gaskins Howard; her brothers Earl Clifford Gaskins and Rickey Edward Gaskins; her sister-in-law Barbara Ann Frasier, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

Elzenia was educated in the Darlington County School System in South Carolina, graduating from Rosenwald High School in 1961.  She married her high school sweetheart, Lessie Daniel Bishop, in 1962.

After raising her daughter, Elzenia attended Marymount College in Virginia, where she studied to become a registered nurse.  She later joined the staff at Columbia Hospital for women, where her skill, dedication, and work ethic made her an exceptional and deeply valued presence in the healthcare community and in the lives of those she served.  Before retiring in 2002, she received numerous awards, including an outstanding recognition for her service from the hospital's Board of Directors.

Though saddened by the closure and memories of Columbia Hospital for Women, but still devoted to the healthcare field, Elzenia continued to serve the community in healthcare through roles at Sibley Memorial Hospital and Providence Hospital.

Elzenia was spirited, outgoing, fun-loving, and full of joy.  She will be missed dearly by everyone.  She had a unique gift for leaving people smiling, laughing, or in deep thought.  Her warmth, wisdom, and light touched countless lives.  She made a positive impact in the lives of all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
