Evelyn H. Walton, “Lena” as she was fondly known to all, began her journey in life on September 4, 1957, and departed this life on April 5, 2023, at home surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late McCoy Hayer and Amanda Bowser Hayer.
Evelyn joined Zion Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She graduated from Gates County High School, Gatesville, NC in 1975. After high school, she went to Elizabeth City State University to complete her Undergraduate degree. She became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She later got her certification in Substance Abuse Counseling and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from East Carolina University. She has always been incredibly selfless, which is why she committed thirty-plus years to a career in social work. Evelyn also wore many hats at her home church, Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was a church clerk, trustee, and usher, worked in the kitchen, and was on the hospitality committee.
Left to cherish her precious memories are her husband, Robert G. Walton, of the home: two loving and dedicated children: Milton Harvey Jr. (Ironda) of Sunbury, NC, and Demetrius Harvey (Whitni) of Corapeake, NC; two stepdaughters: LaKeisha Majette (Roshield) Sunbury, NC, and Vivian Walton of Charlotte, NC: two devoted sisters: Shirley Phelps of Corapeake NC, and Annette Jordan (Floyd) Hobbsville, NC; six grandchildren: Ja’Mareon Hinton, Dontavion Carr, Londyn Harvey, Kennedy Majette, Noah Harvey, Jaxen Harvey, and Skylar Harvey, inlaws: Wendell Walton, Newland, NC, Fentress (Sheba) Gatesville, NC, Shirley Jordan (David) Hobbsville, NC, Waylon Walton, Hobbsville, NC, Doris Walton, Chowan, NC, Delois Walton, Chowan NC, Barbara Walton Hobbsville, NC, and Grady Walton, Gatesville, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
A viewing and visitation will take place on Tuesday April 11, 2023, from 4pm - 7pm at the funeral home.
A celebration of Life for a beautiful life well will be held on Wednesday April 12, 2023, 11am at Zion Tabernacle Church in Corapeake, NC
Final resting place will be at the church cemetery.
