George Alexander Hayer, affectionately known as “George A.”, passed peacefully into the loving arms of our Lord on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
George was born in Gates County, NC on March 22, 1935, to the late George Raleigh and Hattie Hayer. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Lonnie Boyce and Wallace Hayer, and one sister, Edna Hayer.
George joined New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, and he gave his life to Christ during his time there. He remained a faithful member until his health declined, but through his illness, George stated “God never left my side”.
George worked at L.B. Jordan’s egg farm as a truck driver before moving on to work at Dixie Guano Company. Although George voiced that he had little education, his travel was limitless. There was no place George was sent, that he did not cease to amaze his boss, on how quickly he returned. “Whomp Whomp”!!! (horn sounds)
George always said when he traveled, “God is right here with me”.
After retiring from truck driving, George needed something else to do, so he worked for the Gates County Recycling Center as a machine operator. But George, with his friendly personality and quick wit, talked more than he operated the equipment.
George was a loving dad and a grandad that catered to his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and all family functions.
George leaves to cherish his memories: four sons and three daughters, names from oldest to youngest: George E. Hayer of Brooklyn, NY; Patricia A. Hayer of Waterbury, CT; Brenda Hunter (Coolidge) of Suffolk, Va; Linwood Hayer (Tracey) of Franklin, Va; William E. Hayer (Charlotte) of Petersburg, Va; Deborah Adkins (Dennis) of Corapeake ,NC; Gregory Hayer of Corapeake, NC. Two sisters: Hazel Smith (James) of Baltimore, Md; Isadora Bond (Herbert) of Sunbury, NC; one stepsister, Redia Easu of Far Rockaway, NY. One sister-in-law : Erma Hunter of Waterbury, CT.
George leaves also to cherish his memory, a companion and confidante of over thirty years: Margaret Hawk.
George was a grandfather to sixteen grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends
