Obituary

Our dear mother, Gladys Mae Harrell Baker, sadly passed away on June 20, 2023, at the age of 80. She was born September 9, 1942, to the late Malachi and Cotis Marie Harrell. Gladys was the third born of fifteen children.  She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was always there when we needed her. Gladys was a very humble person.

On November 19, 1960, Gladys was joined in holy matrimony to Joe Baker, Jr., and to this union God blessed them with four daughters and one son.

In her spare time, she loved working on Word Search puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Malachi and Cotis Marie Harrell; husband, Joe Baker, Jr.; son, Larry Donnell Baker, (3) brothers, Edward Harrell, Malachi Harrell Jr. and Carl Wallace Harrell; (2) sisters, Marie Bond and Shirley Harrell.

She leaves to cherish her memories: (4) daughters, Joyce Battle (Robert) and Barbara Knight (Ronald) of Gates, NC, Sharon Savage (Cleophus) and Gladys D. Jones, of Corapeake, NC. (8) grandchildren, Tiffany Snowden (Troy) of Suffolk, VA., Krystal Knight and Robert Battle, Jr., both of Gates, NC., Derrick Baker of Eure, NC., Tekoyia Jones of Jacksonville, NC., La’Tia Jones, Natasha Baker and Aaliyah Savage all of Corapeake, NC., (7) great-grandchildren, Reagan, Chris, Brandon, Kaleb, A’Rhian, Makenzie and Aeron. (7) brothers, Robert “Bobby” Harrell (Beulah) of Harrellsville, NC., Melvin Harrell (Beverly) of Richmond, VA., Thomas Harrell and Larry Harrell of Suffolk, Va., Eugene Harrell (Rosa) of Hobbsville, NC., Willie Harrell (Diane) of Harrellsville, NC and Michael Harrell of Virginia Beach, VA. (2) sisters, Gloria Norman of Chesapeake, VA., and Linda Harrell of Woodbridge, Va.  In-Laws; Johnnie Harrell of Baltimore, Maryland, James E Baker (Jean) of CT., Lloyd Norman (Catherine), Larry (Angela), Delois Jones (Tom) all of Gates, NC., Venora “Big Sister” White of Suffolk, VA and Lenora “Little Sister” Harrell of Ahoskie, NC; Aunt Lila Perry of Raleigh, NC and Aunt Hattie Mabine of Ahoskie, NC. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends

A visitation will be held Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 3 - 6 pm at the funeral home.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 26, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Upper Room Assembly Church in Gatesville. Ms. Baker's final resting place will be at New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church in Corapeake, NC.
