Gladys Griffin Obituary

Gladys Marie Griffin was born on February 17, 1962 in Chowan County to the late George Daniel and Nora Cooper Griffin. She departed this life on March 26, 2021 in the early morning hours at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Reverend Linwood and Emma Jean Riddick of Gates, NC.

Gladys who was affectionately called, “G” and “Baby” was educated in Gates County and graduated from Gates County High School in 1980. She drove school bus for the Gates County Board of Education and was known for her loving sternness and encouragements to the students that rode her bus.

She discovered her passion for cooking and worked at various restaurants as a cook for many years. Everything she prepared was fixed with love and everyone enjoyed her food especially her fried chicken and yams.

Gladys joined the Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church at an early age and had the opportunity to rededicate her life to Christ.

Preceding her death was her husband, James O’Neil Riddick, her parents, George and Nora Griffin, a sister, Ruth Vernice Parker, and a brother, Thomas (TJ) Griffin. She leaves to cherish fond memories, a loving son, Dallas (Red) Griffin, a daughter, Dana Nicole Griffin and her four heart beats, her grandchildren: Derony’e Nyriek Griffin, of Sunbury, NC, Layla MiAngel Nicole Eggleston of Clayton, NC, Kalihyah Griffin and Neveah Griffin of Sunbury, NC.  Gladys also leaves three loving sisters: Maggie Chavis Riddick (Melvin) of Riverhead, NY, Emma Jean Riddick (Linwood) of Gates, NC and Menella (Sweetie) Brooks (Johnnie) of Corapeake, NC. One aunt, Iva Griffin of Manassas, VA, and one adopted aunt, Lucretia Norman of Greensboro, NC, a special friend, George T. Hall, an adopted brother, William Gatling, Jr., and a host of cousins, NIECES and NEPHEWS that she took part in raising. We will all miss her dearly, but God loved her best.
