Jerry G. Moore

Jerry was born in Marmet, West Virginia to Clayton and Victoria L. (Spainhour) Smith. Later adopted and raised by Robert E. and “Peggy” Anne Frances (Hoffman) Moore. He grew up in West Virginia, Florida, Connecticut and finally in Portsmouth, Virginia.  He graduated from Craddock High School in Portsmouth, Va, Class of 1958. Jerry married Gloria Jean (Ward) on July 16, 1960 in Charleston, South Carolina. Jerry went on to complete an apprentice program at the Norfolk Naval Ship Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia where he became a machinist and tool maker. After retiring from shop 6, he continued machine work at his place of business, Gates County Auto Machine Shop in Sunbury, North Carolina. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 50 years Gloria Jean (Ward), son Jon Gary Moore, brother Clayton “Bud” Smith and other family members.

He leaves behind his four legged friend and companion JJ, Son, Jeffery G. Moore (Teresa) NC, daughter, Wendy M. Sylvestri (Richard Jr) MD, son, Jay G. Moore (Lisa) NC, daughter in law, Terri Johnson Moore, NC. Grandchildren, Richard E. Sylvestri lll, Kortny “Jean” Bishop and great-grand daughter, Hazel Jean Bishop.  Grandchildren, Kacey Weatherly (Brian) NC and son Adley, Kolton Stevens (Colleen) NC and daughters Morgan and Allie. Bonus grandson, Kyle Fletcher. Brother, Bill Smith (Carolyn) OH. Several other family, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Jerry spent many years working and playing at demolition derby, drag racing, motor building and having fun with family and friends. 

He will be missed by his family and many others who appreciated his friendship, work, wit and enthusiasm for racing.  

 We Love You Dad, Grandpa, brother, Uncle and Friend.

In accordance with his wishes, a memorial service will be held in his honor.
