John Franklin Simpson was born on October 2nd, 1963, to Robert and Martha Simpson. He graduated from Currituck County High School in 1982. After high school, John attended St Paul's College and then joined the United States Navy. In the Navy, he was a Hull Maintenance Technician and served honorably until 1987.
After serving his country, he began his law enforcement career with the Elizabeth City Police Department. John went on to use his skills and training as a police officer at Elizabeth City State University. He was promoted to a lieutenant, leading a team of police officers in serving and protecting faculty, staff, and students on the campus. His career in law enforcement spanned more than 35 years.
John was dedicated to the field of law enforcement. He used his education and certifications to educate new and veteran officers throughout his career. He particularly enjoyed leading and facilitating law enforcement firearms courses, as a certified firearms instructor. John was well respected and was often called upon to give guidance to those he served with. At the time of his transition, John served as a Sergeant with the Town of Edenton Police Department.
John was an avid weightlifter and spent countless hours in the gym. He enjoyed taking trips with his wife and children, spending time with his grandchildren, and reminiscing about the adventurous childhood he and his siblings shared.
John was preceded in death by his father, Robert Simpson. Those left behind to cherish the countless memories include his devoted wife of 31 years, Paula Simpson; his loving mother, Martha Simpson; his children, Jasmine George (Jason), Janisha Simpson, Arell Moore, John Simpson Jr., and Dominique Spellman; his grandchildren, Caiden and Ava George, whom he adored; three sisters, Mable Griffin, Emma Simpson, and Peggy Simpson; two brothers, Martin Simpson and Jessie Simpson; parents-in-law, Haywood and Elaine James, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
