Josephine Lassiter Obituary

Josephine Davis Lassiter, 74, of Sunbury North Carolina departed her earthly life on September 19,2023 at her home. Josephine and her twin brother, Joseph were born on July 5, 1949, to the late Frank and Victoria S. Davis in Nansemond County, Virginia. After graduating from the Suffolk Public School System, she enrolled in the Kee’s Business College Secretarial Program.

On June 20, 1969, she married Ricky W. Lassiter. Their union of 54 years created a legacy. She was the mother of Anthony W. Lassiter and the late Marvin T. Lassiter. She had 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

In early years, she was a member of Balm of Gilead Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia. She joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Charlie Moore. Josephine was a dedicated worker in her church. She was a member of the Usher Board, the Mass Choir of St. Paul, and the Women’s Ministry. Josephine was also a member of the Hospitality and the Kitchen Committee. It was no secret that she was force in the kitchen. Her FAMOUS Lemon Pound Cakes and Carrot Cakes would always have you thinking about a second piece for later.

Josephine was employed with the Gates County Public School System as a Teacher’s Assistant with the Headstart Program. She was also a bus driver, Bus 33, and she also worked at the Gates County Community Center. She was a volunteer at the Sunbury Elementary and T. S. Elementary Schools when her children were young. Josephine experienced a career change and began employment at UniFirst Corporation in Norfolk, Virginia. She retired as a supervisor after twenty-five years of service.

Her unconditional love for her family was extended to all she met. She was a woman of faith and believed in tithing because God always provided. She will always be affectionately remembered as Elo, Phine, Jo, Josie, Mom, Ma-Ma, and Aunt Josephine.

Josephine was preceded in death by her son, Marvin T. Lassiter, Sr., three brothers, Frank, Eugene, and Joseph,(her twin) one sister, Francine Davis. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, John W. Lassiter and sister-in-law, Pamela F. Lassiter.

She leaves precious memories to her husband, Ricky W. Lassiter, her son, Anthony W. Lassiter and her brother Willie J. Davis. She is survived by her mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary B. Lassiter, sister-in-law, Elnora M. Davis brother-in law, Wille B. Lassiter, (Pauline),and her daughter-in-law, Anita R. Lassiter. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Alexius and Acuria Lassiter, Marvin T. Lassiter, Jr. and Dorothy Thomas, great-grandchildren, Cincere Thomas, Myla Allen, Aidan and Avery Beamon, Alaijah and Ayanna Wiggins and our extended family Mykel Allen, Selena Beamon, Shekita and Terrell Whitehead, Ashley, Asia and Tiquan Spratley. She is also survived by her treasured friend, Mrs. Evelyn Riddick.

 A viewing and visitation will take place on Friday September 29, 2023, at the funeral home from 3pm to 6pm.

A celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday September 30, 2023, 12 noon at St. John AME Zion Church in Sunbury.
