Kelay Jones, Sr Obituary

Kelay Lennel Jones, Sr., affectionately known as “K-Boy” or Uncle K, was born on April 27, 1950 to the late Willie M. Jones, Sr. and Doris R. Jones. With his family by his bedside, Kelay transitioned into eternal rest on February 11, 2021 at Sentara Hospital. He was such a humble man of God.

He was a native of Gates, NC. Kelay graduated from Central High School in 1969. After graduating from high school, he served in the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge. After his military service, Kelay was employed at Planters Peanuts now known as Kraft Foods. He was a dedicated and hard worker while working at Planters Peanuts. While working, Kelay attended night classes at Roanoke Chowan Community College and majored in Accounting. He was very good with numbers. After 39 years of employment, Kelay retired from Kraft Foods.

He married Mary Wilson on June 22, 1975 and God added four children to this union.

He was a faithful member of New Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church. He served as the Chairman Deacon for a number of years until his death. Deacon Kelay Jones loved New Piney Wood Chapel as though it was his own home. He loved going to Bible Study, where he sometimes taught on Wednesdays and Sunday School. He was in worship service “EVERY” Sunday.

Deacon Jones served faithfully as a member of The New Piney Wood Chapel Male Chorus; where he graciously sang the songs of Zion with a passionate heart. He always had a song in his heart and loved to sing whether at church or at home.

He was the epitome of humbleness and loyalty and it resonated all throughout his life. He walked the life that he talked about. He showed love to all mankind regardless of their background, situation, or circumstance. He never met a stranger that he could not talk to.

Kelay loved to go to Wal-Mart no matter the location. Whatever state he was in, if there was a Wal-Mart, he would definitely go in it. Kelay loved his family. His grandkids meant the world to him. He looked forward to Sundays, the family gatherings where all of his kids and grandkids would have family dinner “EVERY” Sunday.

Preceding Kelay Jones, Sr., in death is his father and mother, his brother, George Jones, Sr., and two sisters, Mary Jones Wiggins and Willie Mae Wilkins.

Kelay leaves to carry on his legacy to his beautiful loving wife of 46 years, Mary E. Jones; his children: a daughter, Shelinda Ferebee of Gates; three sons: Kelay L. Jones, Jr. (Keri) of Meccan, GA, Dywane A. Jones (Tameisha) of Aulander, NC, and Daryl E. Jones (Leah) of Sunbury, NC; eleven grandchildren, four brothers: Tommie Jones (Delois), Hurley Jones (Tonia), Donald Jones all of Gates, NC and Willie M. Jones, Jr. (Merlyn) of Suffolk, Va; three sisters: Bertha Brown (Willie), Betty Holloway (Bobby) all of Gates, NC and Deloise Foster of Suffolk, Va, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who became family.
