Adoption is a beautiful reflection of God’s love. While we are all created as God’s children in His image, we can relate to being adopted as we return to the Father’s Love. We are celebrating LaVerne’s Birth, Adoption and Final Victory. LaVerne was born as a preemie on July 17, 1961, fighting for her life to her birth mother, Ms. Barbara Hawkins. Ms. Barbara had a long time childhood friend (Bobby) Robert Major and his mother (Roe) Roberta Major. After this 3lb baby girl grew to 5lbs in an incubator, she was released by her loving mom into the care of Bobby and Ms. Roberta Major. This event was unknown to LaVerne’s dad, Richard Lee (Big Daddy). Richard sought out for his daughter, and they connected.
LaVerne was able to know her long lost siblings, later in life. LaVerne was the apple of her mother, Roberta’s eye. Roe referred to her as a raven haired beauty with great big, beautiful eyes. Her cousin, Dottie gave her the nickname (TWEETY). LaVerne was raised by her brother, Bobby and Roe with her nieces and nephews as siblings. LaVerne was very close with her niece Karen (Lovee). She was known to literally carry her around on her hip, even when she was way too big. She said Lovee was her first baby.
LaVerne lived an adventurous life and conquered many obstacles along the way. She began her education in D.C. schools and was later educated in Gates County Schools. She received her high school diploma, as well as various cooking certifications. She was a natural chef, caterer and decorator. She worked for many years at Pine Lakes Country Club as a Head Cook and Caterer. She continued in that field as long as she could.
LaVerne was always reverent about the LORD from an early age. She was a former member of V. C.Temple C.O.G.I.C. under Elder Archie Timmons and Elder Laura Timmons. She bought her children with her and served as an usher. She accepted Christ in her time there. She recently renewed her walk with God. She prayed to be renewed, restored, and saved. She prayed for salvation and renewal, to the glory of GOD.
LaVerne was preceded in death by many: (Bobby) Robert Major, Melvin Major (stepdad), Barbara Hawkins (mom), Lewis Perry (spouse), Roberta Major Hawk (mother), Claude Hawk, Richard Lee (Dad), several Hawkins siblings residing in the DC and MD Metropolitan area, children: Wayland Major, Roosevelt Hawk, and Jermaine C. Major.
She leaves to cherish her memory to her children: Melvin E. Major, Felicia P. Johnson, Jerry Sutton, Jr., Jessica Lee, and Xavier E. Sutton, Major Siblings: Robert (Boo), Roberta, Monae and Nat, Karen (Lovee), Chris and Diane (Sister in law), Hawkins siblings: B.B., Tony, Michelle, Shirley, Wanda, Johny, Eddie, Michael, Richard (Stink) and Keisha.
