Randolph Scott Boyd, born June 3, 1953, in Gates, North Carolina, to the late David Boyd and Mary Riddick Boyd, peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly home on April 30, 2026, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He grew up on Highway 13, where lifelong bonds were formed and they were called the 13 crew.
Randolph was a proud graduate of Gates County Public Schools in 1971. Shortly after completing his education, he began his lifelong career at Newport News Shipbuilding, also known as Northrop Grumman. A man known for his unwavering commitment and strong work ethic, Randolph often worked seven days a week, putting in twelve‑hour shifts with humility and determination. Over the course of 45 years, he served as an MT/PT Inspector in the 038 Department and later as a weekend Makeup Supervisor. His leadership, reliability, and dedication earned the respect of his colleagues and left a lasting impact on everyone who worked alongside him. Randolph retired after more than four decades of faithful service, closing a remarkable chapter marked by perseverance and pride in his craft.
He was affectionately known as Randy, Root Dr, Randy B and Rudie, he lived a life full of passion, loyalty, and adventure. He was a proud member of the Doberman Motorcycle Club, where he found brotherhood, joy, and the open road he loved so much. Whether he was riding his bike, casting a line while fishing, or spending time working with his hands, Randy embraced every moment with energy and purpose. He also cherished the quieter joys of life, especially riding his beloved horse, “Rocky,” and cheering on his All‑American football team, the “Dallas Cowboys”. Above all, Randy treasured time with his family. His greatest delight was his granddaughter, lovingly known to him as “Jay” or “Boo Boo,” with whom he shared a special and unbreakable bond.
In addition to his parents, Randy was preceded in death by his loving sisters, Sherry Boyd and Rita Melton Boyd.
Randy leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Cassie Cross Boyd of Gates, NC; his one and only daughter, Rhonda Boyd of Gates, NC; and his beloved granddaughter, Jay’Lah DeLeon, who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by two sisters, Janet Thorpe (Arthur) of Gates, NC, and Genenive Wilder (Tyrell) of Durham, NC; two brothers, Stanley Boyd of Chesapeake, VA, and Kenny Boyd (Dafen) of Gates, NC; along with two aunts, Dorothy Riddick of Gates, NC, and Mattie C. Jackson of Chesapeake, VA.
Randy’s legacy continues through a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends who loved him dearly and will forever hold his memory close.
