Rev. Mildred "Penny" Lee

Reverend Mildred Penestine Lee, affectionately known as “Penny” was born on June 12, 1945, to the late Alexander and Gwedolyn Hawkins of Gates, North Carolina. She departed her earthly life on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Reverend Mildred "Penny" Lee was a native of Gates, North Carolina, and a proud graduate of the former Central High School in Gatesville, North Carolina. Following her graduation, she relocated to New York to begin her professional career. She was employed by the New York City Department of Transportation, where she faithfully served as a Traffic Supervisor from 1973 until 1992. She later continued her career with the New York City Police Department, serving from 1992 until her retirement in 2001.

In August 1996, Reverend Mildred "Penny" Lee was licensed and ordained as an Evangelist by Bishop Gregory Foster of Bible Faith Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York. The church's strong, Bible-based teaching ministry played a significant role in strengthening and shaping her spiritual walk with God. During her fifteen years as a devoted member of Bible Faith Tabernacle, Reverend Penny faithfully served in various capacities, including as the Adult Sunday School Facilitator, where she diligently taught and shared God's Word. Her unwavering commitment, faithful service, and love for ministry were evident throughout her years of fellowship.

Following her retirement and return to Gates County, Reverend Mildred "Penny" Lee reestablished her membership at Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in support of the ministry of her Pastor. A devoted servant of God, she served as the instructor for the Adult Sunday School Class and as Director of the Women's Fellowship Ministry. Demonstrating her passion for prayer and spiritual growth, she founded the Mid-Week Noon Day Prayer Service, creating a meaningful opportunity for worship and encouragement within the church family. During her time at Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church, she was also licensed and ordained as a Minister of the Gospel, further affirming her unwavering commitment to preaching, teaching, and serving the Lord. She served as an Assistant Minister at Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

Reverend Mildred "Penny" Lee devoted her life and ministry to serving God's people through the gifts of teaching, encouragement, and compassionate ministry. She had a special passion for educating and empowering women, frequently lecturing and leading workshops and seminars designed to inspire spiritual growth and personal development. She also provided marriage and divorce counseling, offering wisdom, guidance, and hope to those navigating life's challenges. Reverend Penny was a steadfast advocate for helping Christian women build confidence, strengthen their self-worth, and embrace their God-given purpose. She firmly believed that through the power of prayer, individuals could attain spiritual maturity, inner stability, and a deeper relationship with God.

Reverend Penny leaves a lifetime of memories to her beloved children: Rhonda Dandridge (Nolan) and Lexie Lee (Keshia); grandchildren: Kendrick Boone and Jasmyne Deloatch; Great-Grandchildren: Khaliah Boone and Ahzeir Thomas; a brother: Graham Hawkins (Mildred); nephews: Danner (Denise) and Delwin (Leia); special friends: Paulette B. Lawrence, Glendale P. Boone, and Betty P. Liverman. Additionally, she leaves a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A public viewing and visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 2, 2026 from 4-7 pm.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 3, 2026 at Stoney Branch Baptist Church at 1 pm
