Ronald N. Hurdle, (64), born in Sunbury, NC, was the youngest of nine children born to the late Hattie Rascoe Hurdle and John Dixon. He began his life’s journey on June 26, 1959.
Ronald, affectionately known as Hawk, received his education in Waterbury, CT, and later at Gates County High School, where he graduated in 1978. During his time in school, he made a name for himself by excelling in basketball, earning a reputation for his skills on the court.
Beyond his passion for basketball, Hawk was known for his love of card games, especially spades and bid wiz. He had a special knack for turning ordinary games into memorable moments filled with laughter and camaraderie.
One of his most cherished trademarks was his unique dance, known as the “muskball.” His enthusiasm on the dance floor was contagious, bringing joy to countless gatherings and celebrations.
Hawk had a warm and friendly way of greeting his family and friends, often welcoming them with his signature phrase, “What’s up Zers?” His presence was a source of comfort and connection for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In addition to his love for life and the unique joys he brought to those around him, Hawk had a special way of encouraging others to seize the day. He frequently called up his loved ones, waking them up with his famous words of wisdom, “You’ll sleep when you die.” This motivational mantra served as a reminder of the importance of embracing each moment and cherishing life to the fullest.
Ronald is now at peace, reunited with his loved ones who preceded him in passing. He was predeceased by his mother, Hattie Rascoe Hurdle, and father, John Dixon, three brothers, Willie, Robert, and George Hurdle, and three sisters, Hattie Dildy, Dorothy Smith, and Renie Dildy.
While Ronald may have left this world, his memory lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, friendship, and the spirit of togetherness to his daughter, Krystal Reed, three grandchildren, TyKirah Reid, JaKyah Gatling, and Jayden Reid of Sunbury, NC; one sister, Sophia Hurdle of Sunbury, NC; one brother, Leroy (Barbara) Hurdle of Waterbury, CT; three best friends, McEll Costen, Jr. of Sunbury, NC, Robert Harris Jr., and Douglas Powell, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
