Shirley Ann Howell White, affectionately known as Ann, passed away on October 8, 2023. She was born on September 20, 1950, in Gates County, North Carolina, to the late Viola Nowell Robinson. Shortly after her birth, she was adopted by the late Norman and Beatrice Howell, who lovingly raised her throughout her life.
In her early years, she was a member of Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church. She served faithfully in the choir and led many of the songs. She had a beautiful voice as she sang songs unto the Lord
Shirley worked at Family Foods Store in Corapeake, NC, where her warm and welcoming presence made her a cherished member of the community. Later, she found love and companionship with James Roscoe White, and together, they relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina. In Raleigh, Shirley dedicated herself to a career in childcare, where she positively influenced the lives of countless children for a decade.
Shirley’s faith was an essential part of her life, and she became a devoted member of Lincoln Holiness Church in Raleigh. Her unwavering commitment to her faith and her church community was evident to all who knew her. Even as her health began to decline, she remained faithful to her beliefs.
Shirley’s strength and resilience were truly remarkable. She faced and conquered the challenges posed by stage 4 colon cancer for many years, defying the odds and inspiring those around her with her courage and determination. She was a loving and cheerful soul, known for her radiant spirit and unfailingly positive attitude, even in the face of adversity.
Preceding her in death is her parents and two stepbrothers, Emerson and Osmond Howell.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories to her husband of 43 years, James Roscoe White, one son; Kevin Bowe (Latonya); three daughters, Kimberly M. Grant, Chrystal Kamau, and Fallon Wright (Hope); five grandchildren, Alexis A. James, Kevyn T. James, Kamya Grant, Elizabeth Norman, and Miracle Wright; two great grandchildren, Jayden D. McCuien and Trey’von X. Smith; a devoted cousin/caregiver, Doris J. Nowell Hunter; a loyal life-long friend, Ella Langston; along with a host of other relatives, cousins, and friends
On Friday Oct. 13, 2023, a viewing and visitation will take place at the funeral home from 3pm to 6pm.
The White family will have a private memorial service on Saturday Oct. 14, 2023, to celebrate a beautiful life that was well lived.
