Sonya Godwin

Sonya E. Godwin, 52, was born on February 9, 1969. Sonya fought a long battle with a lung disease which she beat the doctor’s odds several times. Surrounded by her loved ones, she departed her earthly life and gained her beautiful wings on February 26, 2021.

She was reared by her grandmother, the late Alice B. Eason.

Sonya was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Sunbury, NC.

Sonya attended Gates County Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Gates County High School Class of 1987. She furthered her studies at Elizabeth City State University and obtained a BS degree in Business Administration in 1991.

Sonya was joined in holy matrimony on April 2, 1994 to Pollard Cornelius Godwin. To this union, two children were born.

She began her working career at the Gates County Water Department. She was later employed by Gates County Schools as  an Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent, a clerk to the Board of Education, and as a bookkeeper at Gates County High School.

Sonya was known for her artwork of crocheting and wreath making.

Leaving to cherish her precious memories are: her husband, Pollard Cornelius Godwin; her children, LaShaunna and Derrion Godwin of Sunbury;  an unborn granddaughter, DeKinzie Caeli Godwin; a Sister in Christ, Vanessa Johnson; and her father-in-law, Cortez Godwin.

 A celebration of life will take place on Saturday March 6, 2021 at 12:00pm at the Upper Room Assembly.  The family will receive members of the community on Friday March 5, 2021 from 3:00pm-6:00pm at the funeral home.
