Steve, affectionately known as “Steve Boy”, was born in Edenton, NC, on June 23, 1960, to the late George Lee and Mattie Johnson Norman. He grew up in Sunbury, NC and attended Gates County Schools.
Steve attended St. John AME Zion Church as a youth. He grew up on the family farm where he had many skills. There was not anything that he could not do when called upon.
In his later adult years, Steve moved to Perquimans County, NC. He lived there until his death. Steve and George Jr. worked together for over 20 years in their vinyl siding business. He was a very good carpenter and especially home renovations.
Steve loved sports, particularly baseball, and he had a dynamite arm. He could really get a ball in from the outfield. Steve loved to sing, and for a period sang with a local Gospel group in his hometown of Sunbury. He loved to hunt and fish. He loved to cook and affectionately earned the name “Chef” when growing up. He recently rededicated his life to Christ, and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Steve was a dedicated member of the Mainstreet Men’s Club, an organization committed to supporting and uplifting the community through various activities, events, and service initiatives. The club consistently played an active role in community functions and proudly supported efforts that positively impacted the community.
Steve always enjoyed his family and cousins and was often the “life of the party”. Through this last health challenge, he never changed. He said he wanted to see and talk to everyone while he could and made everyone smile despite his challenge. He was called home on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, George Norman, Sr., his mother, Mattie Johnson Norman-Newby, Stepfather, James A. Newby, Jr., brothers, Johnny Ray Norman and George Norman, Jr.
He leaves to mourn, a brother, William “Bill” Johnson (Ann), sisters, Kay Norman Wiggins (Ronald, Sr.), Dale Norman Reid (Charles, Sr.) and Louise Lightfoot (George-deceased), an Aunt, Carolyn Norman, 10 nieces and 6 nephews.
Our love goes out to two very special people, Cousin Lucretia A. Burke Washington, and his friend Matthew Sims for their devotion, love and care for Steve during his final days. Much thanks to the other Burke family members also. A special thanks to Willie Sellers for being that extra special cousin/brother.
The family will receive guests at the home of Kay Wiggins, 173 Sugar Run Road, Sunbury, NC from 6 pm - 8 pm. nightly.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 22, 2026, 1:00 PM at St. John AME Zion Church, Sunbury, NC.
Mr. Norman's final resting place will be at Gatling Cemetery, Gatling Rd, Sunbury, NC
