Thurman Mitchell

On July 23, 2019, our Heavenly Father came to the bedside of our dear Buddy and took him by the hand to lead him to his eternal home.

Thurman “Buddy” Mitchell was born on July 26, 1938 in Hobbsville, North Carolina to Alfred Leroy and Lula Jane (Kee) Mitchell.

Thurman completed most of his education within the Gates County Public School District.

For over 30 years, Thurman was a dedicated employee at Capital Tires in Lynnbrook, NY as a tire mounter.

Thurman being a lover of music and gifted to play the guitar, joyed the hearts of many in the local surrounding areas of Chowan, Perquimans, and Gates counties. He mentored and was an example to several young men who also played other instruments. They played as a band many weekends bringing a good time to all who heard them.

His love of music led him to meet Thelma White to whom he married on February 25, 1968. To this union, two children were born, James Corey and Nikkia Denise. In addition, Thurman received two added blessings, Joyce and Carolyn.

After Thelma’s death, Thurman was briefly united in marriage to Shirley Mae Hughes, who also preceded him in death.

Thurman accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior as a child.

A good father and friend, Thurman was a kind, peaceful, no nonsense person. He had a heart and ear for good conversation.

Thurman was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Thelma; siblings, Arville Eason, George Lee Mitchell, Charlie Frank Mitchell, Lula Jan Mitchell, Mary Dantizer, Doris Norfleet, and Vivian Smith.

Thurman is survived by his four children: James Corey (Ursula) Mitchell of Jamaica, NY, Nikkia Denise Mitchell of Virginia Beach, Va, Carolyn (Alton) Jefferson, Goose Creek, SC, and Joyce (Vernon Kitabu) Turner of Virginia Beach, Va.; three sisters, Pauline Roscoe of Waterbury, CT, Helen Mitchell and Fannie Mae Mitchell of Elizabeth City, NC; one brother, Allen (Shirley) Mitchell of Elizabeth City, NC.; Seven grandchildren: James Mitchell, Jr., Steven Alton Jefferson, Cheryl Whitney Jefferson, DuWayne Daniels, Bryce Daniels, DaShena Bennett, Dominique Thomas; three great grandchildren: McKenzie Thomas, Tanasha Chappell, and Tyreek Chappell; Special cousins: Willie (Snowball) Brown, Barbara Riddick, and Allen (June) Kee; sincere acknowledgement to his caretaker, Georgia Hutchinson, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. 

A celebration of life will take place on Friday August 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Joppa Missionary Baptist Church. 

Mr. Mitchell’s final resting place will be at the Kee family cemetery.
