William Jerome Gatling, III, better known as “Junior” peacefully transitioned from this life on October 9, 2025. He was born on November 4, 1963, to the late William “Dick” Gatling and Helen-Jean Savage Gatling. He was preceded in death by his sister, Deirdre Gatling-Taylor.
Junior was a fun-loving man with a heart of gold. Though quiet by nature, his warm personality and genuine spirit made him a people person who could make anyone feel comfortable in his presence. He was known for his kind heart, wisdom, love for laughter, and good company. Most of all, he believed in the Lord.
Junior was a graduate of Gates County High School Class of 1983. He worked at Gates County Poultry Farm on the famous Savage Road before being employed by Newport News Shipyard as a ship fitter. He retired from North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) after 20 years as a truck driver. He took great pride in his work and the relationships he built along the way.
Junior leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved sons, William Gatlng, IV, and Jeremy Gatling of Sunbury, NC, whom he shared with his former wife, Tisha Gatling; one granddaughter, Bailee; three brothers, Terence (Ted) Gatling (Robin) of Sunbury, NC; Sherman Gatling (Ja’Queta) and Michael Gatling of Ahoskie, NC; one sister, Robin Gatling Spivey of Bertie, NC; step-mother, Rachel Gatling; two step sisters, Sharon Evans Powell of Gatesville, NC, and Mervellene Evans Reid of Raleigh, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends; special friends, Sweetie & Johnny Brooks; close friends: Allen & Sharon Hayer, Frances, Cliff W., Megan, James Bowser, and the “Wolf Pack”; his devoted cat, Kitty who brought him much comfort and joy.
A viewing and visitation will take place on Thursday Oct. 16, 2025, at the funeral home from 4pm to 7pm.
A celebration of Life take place on Friday Oct. 17, 2025, 11am at Upper Room Assembly Church.
